(Images courtesy\u00a0of <a href=\"http:\/\/insideout.today\">Insideout Today<\/a>)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>While working with our fellow bloggers and editorial teams we&#8217;ve been studying\u00a0how these\u00a0news organizations, particularly those with text at their core, can be helped in\u00a0crafting their stories\u00a0with\u00a0high-quality videos.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>More over, the question we want to answer is:\u00a0can videos become a pathway to deeper engagement?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the help of MICO&#8217;s media extractors we can add\u00a0semantic annotations to videos on demand . These annotations are in the form of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mico-project.eu\/make-sense-of-media-fragment-uris\/\">media fragments<\/a><\/span>\u00a0that can be used\u00a0as\u00a0input for both the\u00a0embeddable\u00a0<strong>video player<\/strong> of HelixWare and the\u00a0<strong>video\u00a0thumbnails<\/strong>\u00a0created by <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/plugins\/helixware\/\">HelixWare\u00a0WordPress plugin<\/a>. Media fragments, in our showcase, are generated from the\u00a0face detection extractor and are both temporal (there is a face at this time\u00a0in the video) and\u00a0spatial (the face within these\u00a0frames is located\u00a0at <em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">xywh<\/span><\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>The new HelixWare video player that we&#8217;re developing as\u00a0part\u00a0of our effort in MICO aims at creating an immersive experience for the end-users. The validation of both video\u00a0player and video thumbnail will\u00a0be done using A\/B testing against a set of metrics our publishers are focused on:\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>time per session<\/em><\/span>, <em>numbers of videos played per session<\/em>, <em>number of shares of the videos over social media<\/em> (<em>content virality<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>Now let&#8217;s review the design assumptions we&#8217;ve worked on so far to reimagine the video player and in the next post we will present the first results.<\/p>\n<h4><b>1. Use faces to connect with users<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thumbnails, when done right, are generally key to ensuring a high level of\u00a0engagement on web pages. This seems to be particularly true when thumbnails feature human faces that are considered \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">powerful channels of non-verbal communication<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in social networks. With MICO we can now\u00a0offer to the\u00a0editor a better tool to engage audiences by integrating a new set of UI elements that\u00a0use human faces in the video thumbnail.\u00a0\u00a0The study documenting this point is &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/labs.yahoo.com\/_c\/uploads\/faces-bakhshi.pdf\">Faces Engage Us:\u00a0<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Photos with Faces Attract More Likes and Comments on Instagram&#8221; and has been authored by S Bakhshi, D. A. Shamma, E. Gilber in \u200e2014.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>2. Increase the saturation by 20%-30% to boost engagement<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/133970152\">interesting finding<\/a> backing up our work is that f<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">iltered photos are 21% more likely \u00a0to \u00a0be \u00a0viewed and 45% more likely to be commented on by consumers of photographs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Specifically, filters that increase warmth, exposure and contrast boost engagement the most.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>3. Repeat text elements<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As seen in most of the custom thumbnail tutorials for YouTube available on-line adding some elements of the title or the entire title using a bold font over a clear background can make the video more compelling and accordingly to some, significantly increase the click-through-rate<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u00a0One of the goals of the demo will be\u00a0to provide a simple and appealing UI where text and image cooperate to offer a more engaging user experience removing any external informations that could distract the viewer.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>4. Always keep the editor in full control<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>We firmly believe machines will\u00a0help journalists and bloggers focus on what matters most\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0<em>writing stories that people want to read<\/em>. This means that whatever workflow we plan to implement\u00a0there shall\u00a0always be\u00a0a\u00a0human (the editor himself) behind the scene validating the content produced by\u00a0technologies such as\u00a0MICO.<\/p>\n<p>This is particularly true when dealing with sensitive materials such as\u00a0human faces\u00a0depicted in videos.
