{"id":1066,"date":"2016-01-19T12:43:18","date_gmt":"2016-01-19T11:43:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.insideout.io\/en\/?p=1066"},"modified":"2016-01-19T12:43:18","modified_gmt":"2016-01-19T11:43:18","slug":"innovation-in-digital-journalism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.insideout.io\/en\/2016\/01\/19\/innovation-in-digital-journalism\/","title":{"rendered":"Innovation in Digital Journalism &#8211; a report from the second year of FP7-MICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p><em>The blog post summaries the work done in the context of the EU project FP7-MICO in the area of <strong>digital journalism<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This last December we attended in Cairo\u00a0one of the most exciting\u00a0events in\u00a0the Middle East and North Africa region on\u00a0Entrepreneurship and Hi-Tech startups: <a href=\"https:\/\/helixware.tv\/in-video-we-trust\/\">RiseUp Summit 2015<\/a><span>. <\/span><span>We engaged with\u00a0the\u00a0<span>overwhelming crowd of startuppers and geeks on our\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/helixware.tv\">HelixWare<\/a> booth and in a separated Meetup organised at the Greek Campus. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>We had the opportunity, during these two hectic days, to share the research work done in\u00a0<\/span><\/span>MICO for\u00a0extending the publishing workflows of independent\u00a0news organizations\u00a0with\u00a0cross-media analysis, natural language processing and linked data querying tools.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h4><span><span>What have we done &#8211;\u00a0the summary of MICO year two in slides \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: 1px solid #CCC; border-width: 1px; margin-bottom: 5px; max-width: 100%;\" src=\"\/\/www.slideshare.net\/slideshow\/embed_code\/key\/dJNq8wJvbaGEM2\" width=\"595\" height=\"485\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"> <\/iframe><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 5px; text-align: center;\"><strong>&#8220;<a title=\"New Thinking in the Practice of Digital Journalism \" href=\"\/\/www.slideshare.net\/cyberandy\/new-thinking-in-the-practice-of-digital-journalism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Thinking in the Practice of Digital Journalism<\/a>&#8221;\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 5px;\">We&#8217;re primarily working with two\u00a0partners: <a href=\"http:\/\/magazine.greenpeace.it\">Greenpeace Italy<\/a> and\u00a0Shoof (a startup\u00a0developing an Android\u00a0app for\u00a0user generated content). Our focus is on the following aspects:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>organizing\u00a0the\u00a0news desk<\/strong><\/span> of small and medium editorial teams by\u00a0creating a\u00a0flexible network of metadata around both text and media<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>reducing the complexity of content management operations<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>extending readers dwell time with <\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">repurposing matching content (namely <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mico-project.eu\/cross-media-recommendation\/\">content recommendations<\/a>)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The results of our work\u00a0is delivered in two forms:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>things worth sharing that we learn along the way,<\/li>\n<li>enhancements on our software products, WordLift and HelixWare, that benefit from the integration with the MICO platform (this part of the work\u00a0can eventually\u00a0help other companies in extending their product\u00a0and services with the same stack of technologies)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>What we have learned<\/h4>\n<p>Evolutions in the news sector are constant\u00a0as\u00a0the<span>\u00a0web has brought us an unprecedented growth\u00a0of information. At the same time the Internet has dramatically\u00a0destabilized\u00a0the existing\u00a0business models that supported journalism\u00a0for a long time. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>We&#8217;re now facing a struggle for\u00a0<span>surviving and the pressing need for\u00a0radical changes through the entire industry.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One thing that we learned is that<strong> throwing news online without context and analysis simply doesn\u2019t work<\/strong> when the focus for digital news is on <strong>interactivity<\/strong><\/span>, <strong>engagement<\/strong> and <strong>community<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The other important aspect is\u00a0that <strong>algorithms are reshaping the user experience of the readers\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0news\u00a0content is constantly re-published in different forms (think of <a href=\"https:\/\/instantarticles.fb.com\/\">Facebook Instant Articles<\/a>\u00a0or the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ampproject.org\/\">Google\u00a0<\/a><span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ampproject.org\/\">Accelerated Mobile Pages project<\/a>) and across different devices. Discovery tools like Taboola and Outbrain\u00a0analyze\u00a0news content\u00a0and with their\u00a0proprietary\u00a0<span>algorithms<\/span>\u00a0leverage on their large distribution networks to\u00a0monetize\u00a0these contents via\u00a0native advertising (eventually\u00a0bringing back a cut of the revenues to\u00a0the content owners).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In this context is clear that <\/span><strong>knowledge structuring and organization have a clear business value<\/strong><span>. More over\u00a0<\/span><strong>data ownership also plays a crucial role:\u00a0<\/strong><span>if the publisher\u00a0maintains the full ownership on its own metadata <\/span><em>it can eventually create new revenue streams\u00a0directly<\/em><span> and <\/span><em>has\u00a0a better\u00a0edge when negotiating with\u00a0third parties<\/em><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Last but not least we learned that <strong>journalists<\/strong>, in this ever evolving scenario,\u00a0<strong>need to keep their attention on writing great stories and on creating meaningful relationships with the members of their target groups and communities<\/strong>. Technology has to be there\u00a0to assist their work but <em>shouldn&#8217;t\u00a0requiring too much of their\u00a0attention<\/em> (at least in most cases).<\/p>\n<h4>Organizing Knowledge<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.insideout.io\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/mico-blog.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1089\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1089 \" src=\"https:\/\/blog.insideout.io\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/mico-blog.png\" alt=\"mico-blog\" width=\"348\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a>As we progressed with our work and kept on developing our semantic editor WordLift (a plugin for WordPress being used by Greenpeace on their magazine website) we realised that structuring contents with a classification scheme would provide the needed context; we also realised that by structuring contents and creating multiple access points (in the form of web pages) we can increase the overall content discoverability over social networks and search engines.<\/p>\n<p>While we&#8217;re still gathering data it is clear that <strong>classifying news content<\/strong> with a clear scheme (<em>Who:<\/em>\u00a0persons and organization involved, <em>What:<\/em> key topics, <em>Where:<\/em> places and <em>When:<\/em> events) <strong>is\u00a0increasing both engagement and traffic<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h4>Improving the web publishing workflow with\u00a0MICO<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adding MICO in this scenario and, specifically for news sites, means\u00a0two things:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we can unveil the hidden semantics on media contents<\/span>; this\u00a0translates into a better search for images and videos\u00a0within the CMS&#8217;s media library\u00a0and a consequent\u00a0reduction of\u00a0the time spent by the\u00a0editor in\u00a0searching\u00a0for media files\u00a0that can\u00a0complement an\u00a0article<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we can create new valuable links between articles and videos\u00a0using the cross-media\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mico-project.eu\/cross-media-recommendation\/\">content recommendations<\/a>\u00a0(<em>this is work still in progress<\/em>)\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4>Takeaways from the testing and validation<\/h4>\n<p>Semantic tagging, as\u00a0implemented in our MICO showcase,\u00a0means that every publisher\u00a0starts curating a set of concepts (expressed as named entities) that\u00a0emerge from the contents being produced and analyzed.<\/p>\n<p>In WordLift these concepts are gathered within an <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.insideout.io\/en\/2016\/01\/introducing-wordlift-new-vocabulary\/\">internal vocabulary<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.insideout.io\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/wordlift-vocabolary.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1036\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1036\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.insideout.io\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/wordlift-vocabolary.png\" alt=\"wordlift-vocabolary\" width=\"1179\" height=\"331\" \/><\/a>This vocabulary brought\u00a0in the organization (Greenpeace Italy in our validation tests) <strong>a new level of self-awareness<\/strong>. The editorial team has began studying more carefully\u00a0the\u00a0<strong>r<\/strong><b>elationship between the\u00a0organization, the concepts they use for tagging<\/b><span>\u00a0and <strong>their<\/strong><\/span><b>\u00a0target audience<\/b>. This process is helping them making the strategic\u00a0editorial decision about what\u00a0connects to what and why.<\/p>\n<h4>Next step&#8230;Finding all videos relevant to\u00a0an article<\/h4>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 5px;\">At the technical level one of the\u00a0most exciting achievement has been to build a first prototype\u00a0to\u00a0connect\u00a0videos being uploaded in HelixWare and analyzed by MICO (using the ASR &#8211;\u00a0Automatic Speech Recognition extractor) with an\u00a0article on the same topic written with WordLift. <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.insideout.io\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/mico-asr.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1093\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1093\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.insideout.io\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/mico-asr.png\" alt=\"mico-asr\" width=\"932\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 5px;\">Here is the workflow:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 5px;\">the editor creates an article with WordLift on the #SaveTheArtic campaign,<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 5px;\">while tagging the article WordLift creates a\u00a0named entity for\u00a0&#8220;Lego&#8221; and a corresponding web page (i.e. http:\/\/your-website\/entity\/lego)<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 5px;\">MICO analyzes a list of videos being uploaded with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/plugins\/helixware\">HelixWare<\/a>\u00a0and several processes take place in the background:\n<ul>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 5px;\">the audio part is split from the video,<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 5px;\">the audio is\u00a0analyzed using with the\u00a0ASR extractor,<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 5px;\">the text derived from the ASR is analyzed with an\u00a0NLP extractor<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 5px;\">the\u00a0NLP extractor\u00a0uses\u00a0both DBpedia entities and the WordLift custom vocabulary that contains the entity &#8220;Lego&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 5px;\">we can now\u00a0look\u00a0for\u00a0videos containing concepts created with\u00a0WordLift and stored in the user&#8217;s\u00a0vocabulary.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Here is the query in SPARQL:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">PREFIX fam: &lt;http:\/\/vocab.fusepool.info\/fam#&gt;\n<\/span><span class=\"s1\">PREFIX p: &lt;http:\/\/www.mico-project.eu\/ns\/platform\/1.0\/schema#&gt;\n<\/span><span class=\"s1\">SELECT DISTINCT ?anno ?entity ?source ?confidence<\/span>\n<span class=\"s1\">WHERE {<\/span><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>?anno a fam:LinkedEntity ;\n<\/span><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>fam:entity-reference ?entity ;\n<\/span><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>fam:confidence ?confidence ;\n<\/span><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>fam:extracted-from ?source .\n<\/span><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>&lt;http:\/\/our-mico-demo-server:8080\/marmotta\/d7eea551-266d-4f93-97c7-42ad2bbc6df1&gt; p:hasContentPart ?source .<\/span><span class=\"s1\">}<\/span>\n<span class=\"s1\">filter regex(str(?entity), \"wordlift\")\n<\/span><span class=\"s1\">order by ?confidence<\/span><\/pre>\n<p>Now the advantage of\u00a0using the metadata generated with WordLift to filter videos\u00a0analyzed with\u00a0MICO is that the selection\u00a0can become very relevant (and of course the filters\u00a0in the query can be much\u00a0more specific than the\u00a0one in this example) and we\u00a0can improve\u00a0the signal\/noise ratio of the Automatic Speech Recognition that is otherwise way to noisy to bring any value in this specific context.<\/p>\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re from the news and media industry and you&#8217;re interested in this work or willing to understand\u00a0how\u00a0this\u00a0approach could benefit your business,\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:hello@wordlift.it\">drop us an email<\/a>!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The blog post summaries the work done in the context of the EU project FP7-MICO in the area of digital journalism.
